Pancake Day is here – lets celebrate!!
Pancake Day has got to be one of my favorite days on the Foodie calendar – and why wouldn’t it be! Weather your a sweet or savory person there is a pancake just waiting for you.
Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, is a day celebrated by many Christian religions including Anglicans, Lutherans, Methodists and Roman Catholics. It is a day that rich foods are celebrated and eaten in abundance as the day after Pancake Day (Pancake Tuesday) is the first day of Lent (Ash Wednesday) and that means that rich foods are given up for the Lent period.
Its called different things around the Globe
Did you know that Pancake Day is called many different things in different countries around the world. Here is what it is called in some places:
In France, Pancake Day is called ‘Mardi Gras’ mean ‘Fat Tuesday’
In Switzerland, Pancake Day is called ‘Güdisdienstag’ meaning fat stomach full of food
In Iceland, Pancake Day is called ‘Sprengidagur’ meaning bursting Day. Another cool fact about this day in Iceland is that they eat salted meat and peas instead of Pancakes!
In Scarborough, England they celebrate by closing the foreshore to all traffic, closing schools early, and inviting all the towns folk to skip.
What do you call Pancake day in your house? Are you a sweet tooth or a savory lover?
Lets make some Pancakes
No matter what the name, enjoy celebrating a day where eating Pancakes is the norm. There are so many pancake toppings it is hard to list them all. Our favorites are those topped with mixed berries like my Gran used to whip up at her place after school as a treat. Here are two amazing recipes from our own Foodie Vault by Chef Daniel to help you whip up your own batch at home.
